Bengaluru, Aug. 9 -- The BCCI's Centre of Excellence (COE) is facing an unusual challenge in filling its key head of sports science position, with several high-profile candidates withdrawing from the process, COE head VVS Laxman said on Sunday.

Laxman said the position had remained vacant despite multiple recruitment attempts, underlining the shortage of professionals with the expertise required to lead the sports science programme supporting India's elite cricketers.

The BCCI had initially reached out to Australian professional Andrew Leipus, who was part of the selection process, but he subsequently withdrew citing family reasons, Laxman said.
