San Jose, March 1 -- Argentine Fernando Batista has been appointed manager of Costa Rica's national team as it prepares for the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifying cycle, the country's football federation said.

The 55-year-old replaces Miguel Herrera, who was sacked in November 2025 after the team's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup finals in the United States, Mexico and Canada, according to Xinhua.

"Known for his development-oriented profile and his experience with national teams, he will bring his international experience and strategic vision," the federation said in a statement on Saturday.
