Madrid, Aug. 28 -- FC Barcelona has loaned goalkeeper Inaki Pena to newly promoted Elche in a move aimed at freeing space to register Wojciech Szczesny, Gerard Martin and Roony Bardghji in its first-team squad.
Pena, who signed a new contract before departing, will spend the season at Elche. The deal is partof Barcelona's financial maneuvering to comply with La Liga's wage-cap regulations.
Veteran goalkeeper Szczesny joined Barcelona on a one-year contract in 2024 after Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a serious knee injury.
He signed a new two-year deal in July, but salary restrictions have again prevented his registration. Left-back Martin faces a similar issue.
