Dhaka, July 31 -- Bangladesh's Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged citizens to reject attempts to divide the country along religious lines, amid the rise of Islamism in the country and increasing violence against minorities by extremists.
Speaking at a discussion titled Ensuring Protection and Security of Minorities, organised by the Sammilita Sanatan Parishad in Dhaka on Thursday, Alamgir reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting minority communities and upholding democratic values.
"We must stand against those who want to divide the country on the basis of religion. We cannot indulge fundamentalism. We want to build a liberal, democratic Bangladesh," he said.
