In Karnataka BJP, Vijayendra Yediurappa's 170-km Ballari padayatra appears to have done just that - turning what looked like a straightforward question of replacing the state president in November into a more complicated calculation for the party's central leadership.

The question is no longer merely whether Vijayendra will get another term. It is whether the central leadership will reward a leader who has taken the fight to the Congress on the ground, or use the November organisational exercise to reset a state unit still troubled by factionalism.
