Tokyo, July 17 -- PV Sindhu progressed to the quarter-finals of the Japan Open 2026 badminton tournament after her opponent, home favourite and former world championNozomi Okuhara withdrew from her match, handing the Indian shuttler a walkover.
The quarter-final match at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium was called off without a single shuttle being hit. Incidentally, world No. 11 Okuhara had progressed to the quarters after topseed An Se-young of the Republic of Korea had withdrawn from the round of 16.
Currently 10th in the badminton rankings, two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu will face world No. 4 Chen Yufei, the Tokyo 2020 gold medal winner, in the women's singles semi-finals at the Japan Open.
