Srinagar, Sept. 14 -- A day after union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would be introduced in all NDA-ruled states by 2029, J&K's ruling party National Conference termed the move "a serious blow" to the secular character of the country.
National Conference Treasurer and Rajya Sabha Member Shammi Oberoi while rejecting the BJP's plan to implement the UCC in 21 states, reiterated that party's opposition.
"The controversial proposed legislation would not only interfere with the personal laws, religious practices and centuries-old traditions of different communities, but could also adversely affect India's unique religious and cultural identities," he told reporters in Srinagar.
