Hyderabad, Sept. 1 -- The Telangana State Legislative Assembly on Sunday unanimously passed Telangana Panchayat Raj (Third Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Telangana Municipalities (Third Amendment) Bill, 2025 to extend 42 per cent reservations to Backward Classes in the upcoming local body elections.
The two bills were passed in the House after a brief but heated debate between the ruling Congress and main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
The bill had capped total reservations for BCs, SCs and STS in rural local bodies at a maximum of 50 per cent, in line with the Supreme court's 50 per cent ceiling on overall quota.
