Guwahati, April 9 -- Braving heavy rains in parts of the state, voters turned out in large numbers across Assam as 38.92 per cent of the electors exercised their franchise amid tight security in the first four hours of the single-phase Assembly election on Thursday.
"The voter turnout was approximately 38.92 per cent as of 11 am," the Election Commission of India said.
The polling was progressing peacefully with no reports of any untoward incident so far, sources said.
Over 2.51 crore electors spread across Assam's 126 Assembly constituencies are eligible to choose their legislators from a pool of 722 candidates, 59 of them women, in 31,490 polling stations. Over 1.25 crore voters are women and 318 belong to the third gender.
