Nanded, May 3 -- Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Member of Parliament Ashok Chavan has urged the union Government to merge the Nanded railway division with the Mumbai-headquartered Central Railway, citing administrative and geographical concerns.

The demand comes in the backdrop of the ongoing process to create a new South Coast Railway zone.

Chavan has written to union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and also communicated with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, holding detailed discussions over the phone regarding the issue.

He pointed out that retaining the Nanded division under the South Central Railway, headquartered in Secunderabad, is neither geographically nor administratively rational.
