Chennai, Oct. 11 -- With the Festival of Light Diwali approaching, the Chennai Divisionof the Southern Railway today appealed to all passengers to strictly avoid carrying firecrackers, inflammable substances, or explosive materials in trains or at railway stationsas they pose serious risks to passenger safety, railway property and the smooth operationof train services.
Carrying these prohibited materials is a punishable offence under the Indian RailwaysAct, 1989, and may lead to imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to Rs1,000or both.
Offenders are also liable for any loss, damage, or injury caused as a result of suchviolations, the Southern Railway warned today.
