Paris, July 13 -- Around 900 people have been evacuated from the Fontainebleau forest area near Paris after a major wildfire broke out, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on Monday.
"We don't have exact figures, but I would say around 900 people have been evacuated," Nunez said at a press conference.
The evacuation was carried out mainly in residential areas bordering the forest, with no casualties or damage to homes reported so far.
The blaze, which began on Sunday evening, has scorched around 800 hectares of woodland, roughly 5% of the entire forest area in what Nunez described as an "exceptional and unprecedented" fire, local media reported.
