Kolkata, Sept. 1 -- A protest stage erected by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) at Esplanade, near the Gandhi statue, was dismantled by Army personnel today afternoon, sparking a political storm in Bengal.
The stage had been set up by the ruling party to protest alleged humiliation of the Bengali language and harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers.
According to Army sources, the structure was dismantled because permission had been granted only till August 31, and the deadline had expired.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who rushed to the spot shortly after the incident, accused the Centre and the BJP of misusing the Army for political purposes.
