Vijayawada, July 12 -- Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will formally inaugurate the replacement works of the Sir Arthur Cotton Dowleswaram barrage, located near Rajamahendravaram on Monday.
The Sir Arthur Cotton barrage, located across the Godavari River, has 175 crest gates and the AP government has sanctioned Rs 152.95 crore to replace 117 old gates with new gates.
Sir Arthur cotton barrage was constructed between 1847 and 1852 and it has become the lifeline of East Godavari and West Godavari districts. The Sir Arthur barrage is the only barrage across the river Godavari which plays a significant role by providing irrigation water to 10.13 lakhs of acres, besides providing drinking water to hundreds of villages.
