Prayagraj, June 9 -- In a significant ruling on police accountability, the Allahabad High Court has imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 per day on authorities responsible for illegal detention.
The court directed that the penalty must be recovered personally from the officials found responsible for such unlawful confinement.
The judgment ruled that detentions exceeding 24 hours without legal justification will attract strict consequences. The court also warned against the misuse of preventive provisions to detain innocent people under the guise of maintaining public order.
