Kolkata, April 8 -- : The Election Commission has decided to deploy an additional 150 companies of central forces in West Bengal, taking the total number to 2,550 ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

The move comes following coordination with the union Home Ministry led by Amit Shah, which has approved the dispatch of more personnel to the state.

According to Election Commission sources, the strength of forces may be increased further if required to ensure free, fair, and peaceful polling.

Officials said the enhanced deployment is part of a comprehensive security strategy for the elections.

West Bengal will go to the polls in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting scheduled for May 4.
