Djibouti, Sept. 13 -- About 1,400 people have fled Yemen for Djibouti in the past 24 hours as Houthi fighters tighten their grip on the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, Djibouti's economy and finance minister said.

Ilyas Moussa Dawaleh said on X that "1,400 refugees arrived in Djibouti from Yemen in just 24 hours".

In a separate post on Friday, Dawaleh said 500 refugees, including women and children, had arrived in the coastal city of Obock after being rescued at sea when their boats ran out of fuel while crossing the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.

Obock lies about 20 km (12 miles) across the water from the Yemeni coast and has for years been a major arrival point for people fleeing the conflict in Yemen.
