Kolkata, May 21 -- Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday termed the West Bengal government's recent notification imposing restrictions on state employees as a "strangulation of democracy", alleging that the move was aimed at silencing dissent and curbing free expression.

In a post on his official X handle, Banerjee criticised the state government's directive which bars employees from making statements to the media, participating in media debates, publishing government documents and making comments critical of the Centre or the state government.
