Kolkata, May 21 -- The Calcutta High Court on Thursday refused to quash an FIR filed against Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee over alleged provocative remarks made during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign.

While rejecting the plea, Justice Sougata Bhattacharya questioned the "irresponsible" nature of the comments allegedly made by the senior TMC leader.

The court, however, directed that no coercive action be taken against Abhishek till July 31 and directed the police to give him 48 hours' notice before summoning him for questioning.

Abhishek has been directed to cooperate with the investigation and cannot leave the country without the court's permission.
