Chennai, July 12 -- Iconic playback singer S Janaki, who passed away on Saturday, was a rebel who upheld self-respect by promptly declining the Padma award in 2013 since it came much delayed for her more than half a century of service to music.

The funeral was held with state honours in Mysore on Sunday. Since her son had predeceased her, she was living with her daughter in law and grand-children. Her demise, coming close on the heels of the departures of Bharathiraja and K Bhagyaraj, has left the film fraternity and her ardent fans in grief.
