Mumbai, Aug. 2 -- The collapse of the Kohinoor Apartment building in Bhiwandi has once again brought the issue of unsafe buildings in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) into sharp focus.

The alarming condition of ageing and structurally weak buildings across the region has raised serious concerns over public safety.

According to official figures, a total of 7,840 dangerous buildings have been identified across eight municipal corporation areas in the MMR, including Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar and Panvel.

Of these, 765 buildings in the MMR and 174 buildings in Mumbai have been classified as extremely dangerous, posing an imminent risk of collapse.
