Chennai, June 15 -- As the annual 61-day fishing ban on deep sea fishing by mechanised trawlers along the East Coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, ended at midnight last night, fishermen across coastal districts resumed their fishing activities by venturing into the sea hoping for a higher catch.
Amid celebrations and bursting of crackers, with fireworks lighting up the midnight skies, the fishermen, after receiving tokens from the district fishing department authorities, ventured into the sea in their revamped mechanised fishing trawlers.
Fishermen in coastal Thoothukudi, Kaniyakumari and Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram and Pudukottai and Nagapattinam districts on the East Coast have entered the sea after 61 days.
