Siliguri, Aug. 26 -- Thirty-six gates of the Gandak Barrage have been opened to facilitate the safe passage of floodwater, an irrigation department engineer said on Wednesday.
The barrage has a designed discharge capacity of 8.5 lakh cusecs. The quantum of water reaching downstream areas, however, will depend on the actual inflow at the barrage.
The development comes amid a flood advisory issued by the Central Water Commission (CWC) following a sudden rise in the water level of the Trishuli river at Furke Khola in Nepal, reportedly around 160 km from the India-Nepal border. The rise has been attributed to suspected glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) activity near the Nepal-China border.
