Tokyo, May 14 -- Nishiyama Misa put one hand on her maiden NHK Trophy in artistic gymnastics after capturing the lead in the first women's session on Thursday here.
The 15-year-old national champion's 110.399 gave her the edge over Paris 2024 Olympian Kishi Rina (109.114), whose fall on the balance beam proved costly.
Defending champion Sugihara Aiko was third on 108.814 going into the second day on Saturdayat Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Points from last month's All-Japan All-Around Championships carry over to the NHK Trophy.
Nishiyama, last year's junior world champion on the floor, is now on the verge of making the cut for the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in October, according to olympics.com.
