Johannesburg, June 10 -- Twelve people were killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting in the Cleveland suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday night, according to local news portal News24, citing police.
At least 10 suspects, heavily armed with rifles, entered the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland late on Tuesday night and opened fire before fleeing in a white vehicle, officials said.
Members of the Jumpers community believe the shooting may be linked to a turf war between groups of illegal miners operating in the area. Illegal mining has been on the rise in South Africa, a country that has one of the highest murder rates in the world.
