Shimla, March 9 -- A massive verification exercise carried out under social security pension schemes in Himachal Pradesh has exposed serious irregularities, with the government removing about 1.28 lakh pension beneficiaries from the rolls after a statewide verification campaign revealed cases of deceased, ineligible and untraceable beneficiaries.

Official information indicates that around 44000 beneficiaries listed under various social security pension schemes were found to be deceased, yet pension payments were reportedly continuing to be credited to their bank accounts.

The revelation has raised concerns over monitoring mechanisms and possible misuse of public funds in welfare schemes.
