Kolkata, May 5 -- A day after her party was defeated in the West Bengal Assembly elections, outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday refused to resign, claiming the electoral outcome was manipulated.
The BJP has stormed to power in the state with a two-thirds majority, picking up 207 of the 293 seats at stake. The Trinamool Congress finished with 80.
Addressing her first press conference after the defeat, Banerjee claimed widespread irregularities and insisted that her party had not truly lost the 2026 Assembly polls.
Launching a scathing attack on the election process, Banerjee alleged that she was physically assaulted inside a counting centre on Monday.
