Dhaka, July 8 -- The government is likely to appoint Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, the current Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York, as the next Foreign Secretary.

Besides, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam is likely to be appointed Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India, a posting widely seen as one of the country's most important diplomatic assignments, officials said.

A senior official, indicating a number of important changes, told UNB on Monday that the government may appoint Irene Khan, the UN Human Rights Council's Special Rapporteur and an internationally renowned human rights activist, as Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.
