Dhaka, Aug. 20 -- BNP has appointed its National Standing Committee member Ruhul Kabir Rizvi as the party's acting secretary general.

The appointment was announced in a press release signed by BNP Assistant Office Secretary Muhammad Munir Hossain shortly after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected the country's 23rd President on Thursday.

According to the release, Rizvi was appointed acting secretary general in accordance with Article 7(B)(6) of the BNP constitution.

The appointment will take effect immediately, it said.

The post of BNP secretary general fell vacant following Fakhrul's election as President.
