, Aug. 27 -- President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday urged the Election Commission (EC) to uphold its image and public trust and ensure free, fair and impartial elections.

He made the call when a four-member EC delegation, led by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.

The President urged the commission to conduct the upcoming local government elections and all other elections in a free, fair and impartial manner, assuring it of his continued cooperation in this regard.

He also stressed the need to institutionalise, strengthen and consolidate democracy and called upon the EC to discharge its responsibilities with neutrality, integrity and accountability.
