Dhaka, Oct. 9 -- Politics should not be about gaining power but about establishing people's rights and ensuring their welfare, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan said on Friday.

He said the democratic system must be strengthened by establishing democracy at the grassroots level and ensuring accountability of elected representatives.

The minister made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion with teachers of The Millennium University at his office at his Gulshan residence in the capital on the occasion of National Teachers' Day 2026.

Representatives of various NGOs also attended the meeting, where the Khan Foundation's website was inaugurated.
