Dhaka, July 12 -- Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Sunday expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of veteran politician, senior lawyer, former Speaker and acting President Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar.

In a condolence message, he described Jamir Uddin Sircar as a distinguished figure in Bangladesh's political and legal arena and an eminent constitutional and legal expert.

The minister said he had played a unique role in organising Supreme Court lawyers in support of Bangladesh's Liberation War in 1971.

He also noted that Jamir Uddin Sircar was a founding member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and made significant contributions to national politics as a member of the party's Standing Committee.
