Dhaka, Aug. 29 -- Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury has said media freedom will be curtailed if journalists are not provided with adequate protection.

"Journalists cannot work freely without protection, and without free and independent journalism, the country and democracy cannot progress," he said.

He made the remarks at the annual general meeting of the Journalists Union, Cox's Bazar, held at Cox's Bazar Press Club on Saturday.

Kader Gani said the state must ensure the safety of journalists to establish democracy.

He called for unity among journalists to protect both media freedom and their professional interests.
