Dhaka, July 8 -- History helps people understand society, develop values and build a sense of responsibility towards the country and the nation, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal said on Wednesday.

"History is not just taught to memorise past events. It teaches us why an event happened, what its social, political and economic context was, and what lessons can be learned from that experience for the future. History is the mirror of a nation's identity. A nation that does not know its history cannot confidently build its future," he said while addressing a freshers' reception ceremony for the 20th semester batch of the History Department at the TSC auditorium of Dhaka University.
