Dhaka, Sept. 24 -- A fisherman died after being bitten by a venomous snake while gathering fish from a net in a canal in Debidwar upazila of Cumilla district early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Moslem Uddin Khan, 58, son of late Fojor Ali of Bhoisherkut village under Mohanpur Union of the upazila. He earned his livelihood by catching fish in local canals and wetlands using a fishing net.

According to family members, Moslem went to a local canal around 3:00 a.m. on Thursday to retrieve his net. While collecting fish by hand in the dark, he accidentally grabbed a venomous snake, mistaking it for a fish, and was bitten.
