Fish worth Tk 5.60 crore die at Benapole farm amid power outage, oxygen shortage
, Aug. 24 -- Fish worth an estimated Tk 5.60 crore have died at a fish farm in Sonamukhi beel in Benapole allegedly after a prolonged power outage disrupted the supply of oxygen to the fish enclosure.
The mass fish deaths began early Saturday at a farm in Raipur-Sonamukhi beel under Bahadurpur Union, with large quantities of pangas and other species found floating dead in the water from Sunday morning.
Farm owners said frequent and prolonged power outages, combined with adverse weather, caused the oxygen level in the water to fall sharply, resulting in the deaths within a few hours.
The affected farm, jointly established by entrepreneurs Alhajul Haque and Faruk Hossain, had around 60 lakh pangas fish. About 150 bighas of ponds had been...
