Dhaka, Sept. 14 -- Eight people died of dengue in Bangladesh in the 24 hours to Monday morning, the second-highest single-day death toll from the mosquito-borne disease this year, while 1,733 new cases were reported, the highest daily tally so far this year.

The latest fatalities have brought the number of dengue deaths in the country to 157 this year, while the new cases raised the total number of infections to 53,570, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the new deaths, three each were reported in Dhaka South City Corporation and Chattogram division while one each was recorded in Mymensingh and Dhaka North City Corporation.
