Dhaka, Oct. 19 -- President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the media is a fundamental pillar of democracy, stressing that a democratic media committed to strengthening the democratic system can serve the people most effectively.

He made the remarks when a delegation of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) led by its President Abu Saleh Akon and General Secretary Mynul Hasan Sohel met him at Bangabhaban.

President's Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam briefed reporters after the meeting.

Emphasising the role of professional journalists' organisations in safeguarding the rights and welfare of media workers, the President said journalists and their organisations must stand united and speak up to protect their professional interests.
