BEIJING, May 22 -- Beijing is now home to more than 7,000 recorded species, ranking its biodiversity among the highest of the world's major megacities, the city's ecology and environment bureau said Thursday.

The bureau added that Beijing's ecological environment has continued to improve steadily during the 2021-2025 period under the 14th Five-Year Plan.

A total of 151 types of natural and semi-natural ecosystems and 7,121 species were documented through citywide surveys, demonstrating remarkable outcomes in biodiversity conservation and placing Beijing at the forefront of global megacities in this regard.

By international standards, a city recording 3,000 to 5,000 species is considered to have a high level of biodiversity, while more ...
