India, Oct. 14 -- In most desi households, our most vivid memories are built around food, family, or community. Chef Ashwin Vilkhu's earliest memories were formed in the kitchen of his family home on Kingsway Drive in New Orleans. He was sous-chef to his father, who cooked recipes from their hometown, New Delhi.

For years, chef Vilkhu cooked shoulder-to-shoulder with his father, Arvinder, at their family restaurant, Saffron NOLA. Together, they were co-nominated for a James Beard Foundation Award for "Best Chef: South."
