India, Sept. 30 -- For the first time, you'll be able to board a train in India and roll straight into Bhutan. New Delhi and Thimphu have signed two cross-border railway projects - a milestone in the neighbours' decades-long partnership - linking West Bengal's Banarhat with Samtse, and Assam's Kokrajhar with Gelephu.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced the plan on September 29, 2025, calling it the first set of rail connections with Bhutan. The 89-kilometre network, costing around INR 4,033 crore, will plug the Himalayan kingdom directly into India's vast rail system. An MoU was signed in Delhi during the Bhutanese Foreign Secretary's visit.
