India, Oct. 9 -- Growing up, Barmer was just a dot on my social science mapwork. Little did I know that years later, I would be travelling to this rustic town to explore its rich heritage, beautifully showcased through its monuments and handicrafts. On a chance encounter with folk musicians at the Jodhpur Riff, a global roots music event, I learned how this princely town had once been an important trade route and how its intricately crafted mirror and applique handicrafts were passed down through generations. It was also a treasure trove of ancient temples, like Kiraadu, dating back to the 11th century.
