India, July 13 -- The FIFA World Cup 2026 has reignited one of football's most unusual officiating rules after the potential semifinal clash between Argentina and England. While FIFA appoints referees on merit and performance, politics also plays a big role in ensuring neutrality.

That's why England's top referees Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor have been ruled out of officiating any Argentina games during the tournament. The same goes for officials from Argentina, who cannot control England fixtures.
