India, Aug. 24 -- For generations of television viewers, Shelley Fabares was a familiar face who successfully moved from child stardom to some of television's most enduring sitcoms. From playing Mary Stone on "The Donna Reed Show" to Christine Armstrong on "Coach," Fabares built a career that lasted for decades. She died Saturday in Los Angeles at 82, her family confirmed. No cause of death was given.

Her career also extended beyond television. Fabares recorded the hit song "Johnny Angel," appeared opposite Elvis Presley in three films and later became an advocate for Alzheimer's awareness after her mother was affected by the disease. She also survived serious liver disease and underwent a liver transplant in 2000.
