India, July 8 -- More than 70 years after Ruth Ellis became the last woman to be executed in the United Kingdom, the British government has formally recognised that her death sentence represented a historic injustice.
King Charles III accepted the government's recommendation to grant Ellis a posthumous conditional pardon after decades of campaigning by her family, who argued that the abuse she suffered before killing her partner was never properly considered during her trial.
While the decision does not overturn her murder conviction, it acknowledges that the punishment imposed in 1955 would not reflect today's understanding of domestic abuse, coercive control and criminal responsibility.
