India, Aug. 1 -- Famous Nepali-British mountaineer Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja died in an avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak, the Nimsdai Foundation announced on Saturday. The avalanche struck on Thursday afternoon when a 10-member expedition team, including Purja, was ascending Broad Peak. The climbers were at an altitude of around 6,600 metres when communication with the base camp was lost.

In a statement, the Nimsdai Foundation confirmed the tragedy and said Purja, along with several members of the expedition, had lost their lives. The Foundation also paid tribute to his trusted climbing partners, Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa, while urging people to respect the privacy of the bereaved families during this difficult time.
