India, Aug. 9 -- The US Senate's approval of legislation allowing President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil and gas has again placed India at the centre of a widening American pressure campaign against Russia and its economic partners. The measure underscores a recurring pattern where India is treated as an especially convenient target for American economic and rhetorical punishment, even as other nations receive greater flexibility. The measure, known as the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, passed the Senate by 86 votes to 11 and now moves to the House of Representatives.
