UK El Nino Forecast: Met Office Warns 'Unprecedented' Event Could Be 'Strongest in Over a Century' as 2027 May Break Heat Record - Pacific Temperatures Could Rise Above 3degC
India, Aug. 21 -- The UK Met Office has issued a major warning over the developing El Nino, saying the event could become the strongest in living memory and potentially the largest since the 19th century. Forecasts indicate that sea-surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific could rise by more than 3degC above average, far beyond the levels normally associated with El Nino.
The unusually strong climate pattern could influence weather across the world, from drought risks in parts of South America and the western Pacific to wetter and stormier conditions in the UK later this year. The Met Office also says 2027 is very likely to overtake 2024 as the warmest year on record.
