India, June 22 -- Long before humans built cities, developed writing systems or cultivated crops, they were already creating art. Deep inside caves across Asia and Europe, prehistoric artists painted animals, handprints and hunting scenes using pigments made from charcoal, ochre and minerals. These artworks have survived for tens of thousands of years, offering a rare glimpse into the minds of our ancient ancestors.

For much of the 20th century, archaeologists believed the world's earliest cave paintings were found in Europe. However, discoveries in Indonesia over the last decade have transformed that understanding, revealing that some of humanity's oldest known artworks were created in Southeast Asia.
