India, June 7 -- Less than two months after the government suffered a major legislative setback over its delimitation-linked push in Parliament, changing arithmetic in the Rajya Sabha is bringing the ruling National Democratic Alliance closer to the numbers needed for contentious legislation, potentially reshaping the political equation in the Upper House.
The shift has been rapid.
On 17 April, the government failed to secure the special majority required for the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, part of a broader legislative package linked to delimitation and implementation timelines for women's reservation.
